The NYT Is Right:

Democrats Are Losing Voters. Here’s How to Fix It.

Person reading NYT article about voter registration

Last week, The New York Times published a (hopefully) sobering analysis of a trend we spotted back in 2019: the Democratic Party is hemorrhaging voters long before Election Day.

Between 2020 and 2024, Democrats lost 2.1 million registered voters across 30 states, while Republicans gained 2.4 million. That’s a 4.5 million voter deficit. This is a trend that, if left untreated, could undermine Democratic strength for decades to come.

As the Times puts it, this is a “big flashing red alert” for the Democrats.

So, what do we do?

We Have To Identify, Register, and Engage Voters

Declining Democratic voter registration trends were one of the guiding reasons Civitech was founded in the first place.

The Democratic Party’s registration deficit issue is about who gets mobilized, who gets left behind, and whether Democrats can compete in states where margins are razor-thin. In most cases, right now, they can’t

That’s literally why we exist. Our partisan targeted voter registration programs are built specifically to solve this crisis highlighted by the Times, and have been proven via both independent verification and rigorous testing we conduct yearly.

It’s What Civitech Does. Here’s How We Do It:

The Times article described a party struggling with closing a registration gap that is leading to massive losses in ground nationwide. Here’s how Civitech is already fixing it:

Smart Targeting

Using proprietary data layered with partisan modeling, we identify unregistered voters who are most likely to vote Democratic (renters, students, and those disproportionately affected by voter suppression, etc.).

We don’t do “spray and pray” like most other voter outreach organizations. We know who we’re targeting, why, and what to say to get them involved.

Frictionless Registration

Personalized, pre-filled, postage-paid mailers make it easy for people to register. When we remove barriers, more people take action.

Reactivating Lost Voters

People move, get purged, or miss a cycle. The voter file changes at least 25% every cycle. We specialize in bringing those voters back onto the rolls so they’re ready to vote blue again.

Multi-Touch Outreach

Mail is just the start. With peer-to-peer messaging, text follow-ups, and real-time tracking, we know exactly what’s working.

While there is an immediate need to register voters and fight injustices perpetrated by the current administration, Democrats’ top priority should be building long-term power that can win elections in 2026, 2028, and beyond.

Democratic Support is Eroding, But We Can Still Stop It

The Times calls voter registration decline a “hidden-in-plain-sight crisis” for Democrats. We couldn’t agree more. And we’ll add to it that every new Democrat we register is another vote for progress, equity, and a stronger future.

If you’re a Democratic or progressive campaign, candidate, or organization ready to stop playing defense and start expanding the electorate, let’s talk.
